Course Description: Ceramics is a part of Utah’s High School Visual Arts Curriculum (VA1220). Ceramics develops basic skills in the creation of 3D forms from clays. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher level thinking skills, art-related technology skills, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics. Ceramics involves basic methods of working with clay as an art form, design of ceramic art and the roles ceramics forms have played in world cultures, past and present. Experiences in ceramics will include problem-solving exercises, making functional and non-functional ceramic objects, and construction of ceramic forms by means of pinch, coil, slab and wheel-thrown techniques.
General Information: Ceramics is an Art class which appears deceptively easy. However, in reality it is surprisingly difficult and requires careful attention, persistent, and practice. Learning is a rewarding, but sometimes difficult, individual process. Let’s work together to make this year your best and most rewarding learning experience. Don’t give up, I am here to help you learn to be successful and enjoy the art experience. Remember, success is determined by attitude, performance, and individual progress. Let’s make this your best year ever!
All 504 and Special Education students are entitled to reasonable accommodations as determined by the students 504/IEP team. A copy of the student’s accommodations will be provided to each teacher. It is the responsibility of the student and parents to review the accommodations sheet with each teacher at the beginning of each trimester and determined the appropriate accommodations for any given class.
Grading Scale, Attendance and Tardy Policies, Bee Time, Dress Code, Citizenship grade, will follow school wide procedure. No extra credit will be given.
Missed work due to absences is to be made up during Bee Time, unless prior arrangements are made with the teacher. (Must be made up one week after absent to receive full credit---0 credits after one week)
Absolutely No paraphernalia can be made. Student will be immediately reported to school officer, receive a failing grade, a U in citizenship, and cannot repeat the class.
Grading: All projects will be graded twice. 100 points possible for one project 1st grade / Greenware: (before the project is fired the first time) 50 points Criteria: Technical Proficiency*Creativity*Quality 2nd grade / Glazed (after the project is fired for the second time) 50 points Criteria: No glaze defects Daily Points: 20 points daily for being on time, working, cleaning up, and following the class rules. There will be 6 to 8 projects. Approximately one per week Required: One entry in BEHS Trimester ART SHOW. Three written tests: 2 Vocabulary and Final Test One Page Typed Fine Arts Event Report
